At the Jewish Grad Organization (JGO), we talk a lot about what it looks like when student communities become self-sustaining. Sometimes, you see it play out in a single moment. 

At the final Shabbat dinner of the year hosted by the Fordham Jewish Business Students Association, what began as a celebratory gathering quickly became something more meaningful.

It became a passing of the torch.

The outgoing student leaders spent months planning the evening, using the remainder of their budget to create one of the largest and most successful events the club has ever hosted. But their intention went beyond one final celebration. They designed the night to bring together the full community, honor what had been built, and formally welcome the incoming leadership team.

As the evening unfolded, the room filled with gratitude and reflection. There were hugs, laughter, tears, and heartfelt words between students stepping down and those stepping up. It was a clear reminder that leadership in these communities is not just about roles. It’s about responsibility, trust, and continuity.

That meaning was magnified by Fordham JBSA’s story.

Just a year and a half ago, the club had been dormant for 13 years. Through the leadership of passionate students, supported by JGO, it was re-established and rebuilt into a thriving Jewish community. What started as a small group has grown into a consistent presence on campus, bringing Jewish grad students together for Shabbat dinners, programming, and connection.

Watching that growth has been powerful. But seeing one generation of leaders hand it off to the next was the real milestone.

At JGO, we’re not just building programs or running events. We’re building communities that sustain themselves.

Fordham is exactly what that looks like in practice. Students didn’t just revive a club. They created something durable enough to be passed on.

As one chapter ends and another begins, the message is simple: when students build with intention, the community lasts.
